Sleep Theory Kansas City Concert reviews
Cabaret wonderfully excessive
The Sleep Theory CABARET show last night was unlike any concert I have attended in my 40 years of concert-going. The stage was set up for loud heavy metal guitars, bass, and drums, with the lead vocalist dancing in a top hat with a silver-tipped cane. Burlesque dancers bumped and grinded around the stage, with the most talented dancer being a young blonde sensuously dancing with a gilded hula-hoop and displaying her bare breasts gratuitously.
The presentation reminded me of the type of shows I saw in New Orleans in 1969 or 1970, with strippers ruling Le Rue Bourbon and female impersonators being the norm. There were contortionists, acrobats, go-go dancers, modern ballet dancers, a buxom brunette in a black leather bustier, boa dancers, women in lace bikinis, and drag queens who commanded the stage when needed. These drag queens had a lot to offer...
Towards the end of the show, the drummer performed an extended solo while a young male Native American in full native dress executed a Prairie Chicken Dance, which was quick, involved, and physically demanding - a highlight for me. Sleep Theory always delivers a phenomenal live performance, and this was my third time seeing them.
The music was exceptional, with all musicians playing hard and passionately. The variety of songs, both familiar and new, added to the experience. Sleep Theory is the contemporary metal band that can pull off this type of presentation, combining talented dancers with theater, mime, and bit part acting.
Despite the stage antics, the music remained the focal point of the show, making it one of the most enjoyable concert events I've ever been to. Additionally, Sleep Theory provided fans with super-cool, reasonably-priced merchandise, including a unique concert souvenir T-shirt, a House of Blues poster, and an autographed Cabaret poster on film-stock featuring the musicians and dancers. Well done!
